St. George

Obituary

Wilbur Monroe Cobb, affectionately known as "Wilmer" was the son of the late Codoza and Hattie Cobb of St. George, SC.  He was born on October 22, 1924 and was one of six children.  He departed this life on January 21, 2021 at Prisma Health (Richland Memorial Hospital) after an extended illness. He was a resident at Life Care Center in Columbia for the past year.

Wilbur attended the public schools of Dorchester County for a short time.  He later worked at a steel mill plant in North Charleston where he retired after 24 years of faithful service.

At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ and became a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in the Grover Community.

Deacon Wilbur Cobb served faithfully at St. Luke United Methodist Church and New Grace United Methodist Church with his wife and family for many years.  He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, President of the Men's Choir and Church Choir, Trustee Board, and other auxiliaries.

In his earlier years, he sung with a gospel group known as the Dixiaires. He traveled all over the state of South Carolina as well as outside South Carolina carrying the Gospel of Jesus Christ through music.  Through his singing, many were touched, encouraged, and blessed!

Music was his life!  Everywhere he went, people wanted him to sing, "Eternal Life," his favorite song.  He sung it with the anointing, passion, and excitement!  That song was his testimony!!

In 1948, he married Celia (Belie) Haynes of St. George, SC and from this marriage, four beautiful children were born: Wilbur N. (Tody) Cobb, Cenell Cobb, Henry Donald Cobb, and Billy J. Cobb.

In addition to his parents, Wilbur was preceded in death by his first wife, Celia (Belie) Haynes; Floyd Mae Primus, his second wife; three brothers: Frank (Sallie Mae) Cobb, Morgan Cobb, and Fletcher Cobb, two sisters: Marcena (Albert)Simmons and Freddie Mae Cobb Simmons; his only loving daughter, Cenell Cobb Hamilton.
