Virgil Barnwell was born on January 20, 1942, in St. George, South Carolina, to the late Albertha Barnwell and Arrie Britt. He peacefully departed this earthly life on May 10, 2026, surrounded by the love of family, leaving a legacy of quiet strength and kindness.

Virgil was educated in the Dorchester County public school system. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he relocated to New York, where he worked diligently managing a dry-cleaning business before later becoming the independent owner of a bread company.

On December 10, 1992, Virgil married the love of his life, Kim Barnwell, in New York. After retiring, the couple returned home to St. George in 2007, where they owned and operated Fast Point Convenient Store for more than ten years. Through the store, Virgil became a familiar and comforting presence in the community, enjoying conversations with customers and becoming part of the everyday rhythm of the town he loved.

Virgil found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved New Orleans jazz, sports, traveling, dining out, and sweets of every kind. Though quiet and reserved, those closest to him knew the depth of his kindness and generosity. He never sought recognition for the good he did, choosing instead to love and help others quietly and sincerely. After returning home, he became a regular visitor of St. Mark Baptist Church, where he found peace, familiarity, and fellowship.

Virgil will be remembered as a dependable man with a gentle spirit and generous heart. His love was not always spoken loudly, but was shown through his steady presence, quiet acts of kindness, and unwavering care for those around him. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving, devoted, and kind wife of thirty-four years, Kim Barnwell; beloved mother-in-love, Clara D. Britt; Daughter, Diane Crawford (Dirk Dowdley) ; Grandchildren, Shakita (Clarence) Henderson, Rodney Jones, Shakeena Davis, and Shamable Crawford; Great-Grandchildren, Nai'Asiah Jones, Isaiah Henderson, Jessica Glass, Nai'Lah Jones, Titus Henderson, and Clarence Henderson Jr.; Brothers Alvin (Karen) Britt of St. George, SC, Sylvester Britt (Karen Sanchez) of Hope Mills, NC; Sisters Florenda (Leamon) Sanders of North Charleston, SC, Josephine (James) McNeil of St. George, SC; Delaine Franklin of North Charleston, SC; along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, bonus children Venus Williams and Flamingo (Keith) Brown, extended family and dear friends who will hold his memory close to their hearts.
