Saint George

Obituary

Rosa Mae Footman was born September 8, 1929 to the late Mr. Peter Dacus and Mrs. Kersey Anderson Dacus in the Byrds' Community of Saint George, South Carolina.  She was the 2 nd of 10 children, and the oldest girl.  Seven siblings preceded her in death:  West, Nathaniel, Simon, Samson, Freddie, John, and Lindon.

Rosa was educated in the Dorchester County School System.  However, like many during her school years, she left school to help her parents on their farm.  In the 1940's and 1950's, she spread her wings as a young woman and traveled to Florida and New York to find her way and make a better living for herself.  Rosa also joined the House of God Church, Keith Dominion at Band # 1 Brooklyn, New York, where she received the Holy Ghost during these years.  During her membership, she served as a Deaconess, Missionary, Building Fund committee member, and both Church cleanup and Kitchen Committees.  She loved to cook for the church events and participate in church Fashion Show programs.  Most of all, she LOVED praising the Lord, reciting poems, and performing monologues that her mother taught her.  She then retired after working for 40+ years for the City of New York's Queens General Hospital in Flushing, N.Y.  Clifton and Rosa then moved back to Saint George, S.C. after retirement.  She continued to be an active church member after retirement and joined the House of God Harleyville in the 1990's where she reacquainted with many friends and family and served the church for many years.  The Harleyville church members loved her dearly.  In her latter days prior to her death, she became a member of the House of God Ridgeville.  She was still reciting poetry and enjoying Jesus at age 92 and the members of Ridgeville church also loved her dearly.

On October 19, 1957 at The House of God Band # 1 Brooklyn church, Rosa married Clifton Johnnie Footman from Harleyville, who was the love of her life.  To this union one child was born, Stefanie Footman.  Clifton preceded her in death on January 4, 2020.  During her lifetime, Rosa was known and loved throughout the Saint George, Texas Community.  She often shared fond childhood, dating, community and church memories.  To her friends and family, Rosa was known as "Mink and Burr".  She stood up for what was right, although sometimes misunderstood but was a sweet and loving person and many loved her.  As time went on, she had many God-children, and those that adopted her as Mom and Grandma.

Rosa departed this life at home on Thursday, April 21, 2022.  She was surrounded by friends and family through the week up until her death.  Many loved her and will miss her dearly.

Rosa's memories will be cherished by her daughter, Stefanie Davis (Eugene) and granddaughter, Brittany Rose Davis both of Summerville, SC; two sisters, Dorrell Ferguson (Cleveion) of St. George, SC and Kersey Hamilton (Phillip) of Palestine, TX; many nieces, nephews, God-children, and adopted children (Tommy, Beatrice, Ruby, Benjamin "Benny-Boy", Gloria, Alvin, Delores, Jeannie, Carol, Patricia and Eugene); special cousin, Olivia Ann Scott of Long Island City, NY; special nieces, Vera Boyd of Leesburg, GA, Chereta Colonel of St. George, SC and Sonya Douglas of Tennessee Colony, TX; special granddaughter, Tatyana Davis of Philadelphia, PA; special friend, Christine Moses of Charleston, SC.
