Robert Mathay Smith, of Saint George, South Carolina went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 9, 2023 in the Orangeburg Regional Hospital. The eldest son of the late Carrie Lee Smith (Jasper) Stroman, and his father Robert (Rosa) James was born December 23, 1942.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Johnnie Mae Williams Smith of 30 years, his brother Jasper Stroman Jr, Aunt and Guardian mother Lisher Prince and nephew, Teri Anthony Yeadon.

Robert attended the public schools of Dorchester County. He spent his life as an auto mechanic, landscaper, builder, barber, and electrician. He treasured the home that he built for his family, that became their homestead on Hart Road.

Robert enjoyed the sounds of music. He expressed his love for his loved ones through music. In his presence, you would be entertained by him playing his guitar and of course his one-man orchestra and singing many of his recordings. He also sang in the Shady Grove United Methodist Male Chorus. He was baptized at an early age. He used his craftmanship to aide in the upkeep of the church. He was also instrumental in rebuilding many of the tents at the Shady Grove Campground.

Robert was recognized as Man of the Year on August 17, 2019, for his hard work, dedication, commitment and excellence to his church and the community by Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

Robert leaves to cherish his love and fond memories; his children Robert Lee (Kacy)Smith; Bowman, SC, Walter Ray (Stacy) Smith; St. George, SC; Evone (Furman) Williams Gardner and Virgil Clay (Cynthia) Williams both of Bowman, SC. Brothers; Dr. Cyrus DeLee (Rene')  Stroman, Lt. Cmdr Navy of Jacksonville, Florida, Alexander Stroman of Charleston, SC. and Honorable Ralph(Delores)  James of St George, SC and Sisters, Barbara (Allen)  Stroman Code of Columbia, SC, Debbie Stroman Yeadon of Goose Creek, SC, Bobbie (Douglas)  Solomon of Walterboro, SC, and Michelle (Terry) James  of St. George, SC. Loving Grandchildren and devoted Granddaughter, Brittany  (Ray) Smith-Washington, Shaquill Williams, Jaleisa Fogle, Yolanda (KJ) Summers, Felicia Gardner, Jada Smith, Robert R. Smith, Furman M. Gardner, Antonio Guess, and Ray Smith Jr.  Great Grand Children; Mykhia Davis, Damiya Riley, Cameron Washington, Mason Gardner, Ellaina Adgerson, and Messiah Summers.  Sisters-in-law; Levern (Ray) Williams Lemon of Harleyville, SC, Geneve Stroman of Washington, DC and Claretha (John) Williams Kelly of Maryland and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
