Nellie Brown Carey was born October 27, 1928 to the late Phillip and Olie Boyd Brown in Harleyville, SC.
Nellie grew up in a Christian home. At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined Greater St. Paul AME Church where she participated actively in the church's activities.
Later years she moved to Richmond, Virginia and joined Hood Temple AME Zion Church. She worked very faithfully in the church.
She was united in holy matrimony to James Carey, Jr. She was blessed with one daughter and one granddaughter.
She worked many years with the State of Virginia. After retirement she returned home with her family to South Carolina. She rejoined Greater St. Paul AME Church. She worked faithfully with the Stewardess Board, Missionary, Kitchen Aide and David Sojourner Senior Center (Meals on Wheels).
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, James Carey, Jr. and her brother, L.H. Brown.
She leaves to cherish her memories a devoted and loving daughter, Lois V. Stokes of the home, one devoted granddaughter, Vivica L. Stokes of Madison, AL; one sister, Lennard Sue (Gilbert) Mack of Harleyville, SC; one sister-in-law, Bernice Brown of Harleyville, SC; one special cousin, Daisy Stephens of St. George, SC; two special pets, Hutch and Starski Stokes; several nieces, nephews, a host of relatives and friends.
