Rumell J. Brown of St. George, South Carolina transitioned into eternal rest on Monday, April 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She lived 100 remarkable years filled with faith, service, and devotion to her community.

Rumell Jenkins Brown was born March 5, 1926, in St. George, South Carolina. She was the third of twelve children born to the late Albert and Maggie Britt Jenkins. She grew up in the Texas community of St. George, South Carolina, where she attended elementary school. After completing Williams Memorial High School, in 1945. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science Degree from Claflin College (University), Orangeburg, SC, 1949.

Her professional career included teaching positions at Williams Memorial Elementary School and St. George High School in St. George, South Carolina. She retired from St. George High School in 1990 with 30 years of dedicated teaching service.

Mrs. Brown was a devout and steadfast Christian. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and joined St. Mark Baptist Church in the Texas Community of St. George, South Carolina, under the pastorate of Reverend Morris Wright. She was a tireless worker who faithfully served in numerous auxiliaries. She organized and directed the Sunbeam Choir, Usher Board, Pastoral Aid, Willing Workers, Floral Club, Gospel Choir, Senior Choir, Superintendent of the Sunday Church School, Praise and Worship Leader, Secretary for the State Baptist Training Union (B.T.U.) LH Baptist Congress of Christian Education board member, Field Missionary for the Lovely Hill Associational Field, Secretary for the Good Hope Missionary and Educational Union, Registrar for the State B.T.U. Congress, and a Member of the Lovely Hill Finance Committee. Original member of the Lovely Hill Baptist Convention Choir.

Mrs. Brown was also active in her community. She served as Past Worthy Matron for Christian Love Chapter #11 and White Oak # 37, Order of Eastern Star, and as Flag Bearer and Grand Trustee for Williams Grand Chapter, Orangeburg, South Carolina. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star for more than fifty years.  Mrs. Brown took great pride in her family. She will be remembered for her warm smile, compassionate nature, and great sense of humor. One of her favorite scriptures was, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13.

On July 1, 1947, she was united in Holy Matrimony with Deacon John Murray Brown of Orangeburg, SC. To this union they were blessed with three children; Eugenia, Joan and Michael.

Rumell is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Maggie Jenkins; her husband Deacon John M. Brown of 48 years of marriage; one daughter, Joan D. Brown; Two sisters, Mary Lee Britt, and Janie B.Brown; Six brothers, Pinckney, Wilbert., Harry Lee, Amos, Albert, Jr. and Lawrence.

She leaves to cherish with her fond memories: one devoted daughter Eugenia (Dunmore) Lyde of Florence, SC; one beloved son, Col. James Michael (Vickie) Brown of Columbia, S.C., three sisters, Maggie Primus, Etta James of St. George, S.C., and Elease Spell of Washington, D.C. She also leaves five loving grandchildren: Shaquan (Kyle) Mutchler, Jemeisha, and Mon'et Lyde, all of Florence, S.C.; Danielle, Columbia SC, and Kiara Brown, Charlotte, NC; one devoted sister-in-law, Mrs. Ann Jenkins of St. George, SC., along with many special nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, extended sorrowing relatives, family, and friends.
