MICHAEL SMITH was born on August 4, 1948 in Reevesville,
SC to the late Gladys Floyd Ravenell. He grew up with his
grandmother, Eugenia Floyd, who was a strong figure in his life until her death. He departed this life for a place of eternal rest on Thursday, March 14, 2013, while at his residence.

Michael spent his early life growing up and was educated
within the public schools of New York and later moved to South
Carolina where he graduated from Williams Memorial High School in
1967. After graduation, he relocated to New York and worked at the Royal Typewriter Company as a shipping clerk. In 1968, he answered the call of duty and enlisted in the U.S Army. He traveled to many places during his active enlistment including Hawaii and was deployed and served in combat in the Vietnam War. While in the military, he
received the following medals: National Defense Service Medal,
Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Good
Conduct Medal. After serving in the United States Army, he received an honorable discharge in 1971. Michael was a faithful and devoted member of Bethel AME Church where he served on the Usher Board.

He attended Manpower Technical Training in Charleston and
O-C Tech in Orangeburg, SC. He was a licensed insurance agent, and employed as a security officer at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg where he retired. He later became employed as a truck driver for various companies including Southern Tank Transport in Holly Hill SC, until his health failed. He had a strong love for his dog, Brownie, but fishing was his favorite pastime.

He was united in Holy Matrimony with Floria Mae Syphertt on
July 31, 1977. This union was blessed with two children.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Floyd
Ravenell; one brother, Eugene Floyd and his father-in-law and
mother-in-law, Henry Syphertt and Lillie Stewart Syphertt.

Michael leaves to celebrate his life and cherish fond memories:
his loving and devoted wife of 35 years. Floria Syphertt Smith of St. George, SC: one daughter, Michelle Smith of Goose Creek, SC; two sons, Michael (Towanda) Smith of McDonough, GA and Gerald (Jill) Mack of Savannah, GA : six grandchildren, Miguel Mack, Malayshia Mack, Malayana Mack, Micahi Smith, Miles Smith, and Jodeci Wheaden; three sisters-in-law, Yvonne (Donald) Glover of
Springfield, VA, Annie Heath of Stockbridge, GA, and Tamora
Syphertt of Texas: two brothers-in-law, Howard (Thu) Syphertt of
Riverdale, GA and Mitchell Syphertt of Reevesville, SC; and special family members, Julie A. Dicks, Jennifer Britt, Kim Huynh, Wadi Clark, and Quintin Snipes. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
