Obituary

Mary Weatherspoon, daughter, of the late Mary Britt-Brown, the oldest of six children born April 16, 1934 in Harleyville, SC went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

Mary attended elementary school in Dorchester County and graduated from Girls High School in Brooklyn, NY. She attended Pace University, NYC, where she majored in Early Childhood Education and Audio Visual.

She was married to Kenneth Weatherspoon for 57 years. To this union she was blessed with five children, eleven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary Weatherspoon worked for the Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY for many years. She worked as a case coordinator at United Homecare Services and retired in 1996.

Mary returned to Harleyville, South Carolina and joined Greater St. Paul AME Church where she worked faithfully until her health failed. She served on Stewardess Board No.1 and as 2nd Vice President on the local Women's Missionary Society. She regularly attended Bible Studies and had a love for the Hour of Prayer Group.

Mary enjoyed attending church, reading, shopping, and traveling.

Mary was preceded in death by her loving son Ron Weatherspoon along with other family and friends that awaited her at those Pearly Gates.

Mary leaves to cherish sweet and loving memories; her loving husband, Kenneth R. Weatherspoon, Sr.; two sons, Kenneth R. Weatherspoon, Jr. of Harleyville, SC, and Gary (Cherita) Weatherspoon of Bear, DE; two daughters, Patrice Walker of Kaneohe, HI and Althea Featherston of Charleston, SC; two brothers, Jesro Brown of Harleville, SC and Walter (Lystra) Brown of Brooklyn, NY; three sisters, Gloria (Daniel) Boyd of Harleyville, SC, Lizzie E. Lee of Richard, VA and Rita (Carl) Freeman of Harleyville, SC; two special aunts, Zora Coakley and Goldie Dunnings both of Brooklyn, NY; sisters-in-law, Minnie R. Williams of Harleyville, SC and Janie Green of Brooklyn, NY; one brother-in-law, Vernon Weatherspoon of Richmond, VA; eleven grandchildren , seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
