Obituary

Julia Kate Kirton Glen, affectionally called "Granny" by everyone, 99 years and 10 months, departed this life July 10, 2026 at home in Dorchester, South Carolina.  She was born September 26, 1926 in Aynor, South Carolina to Crusoe and Sarah Jane Best Kirton.  She was married to the late George Glen.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Delah Faye Glen, grandson, Delton Jesus Glen, and special niece, Anetta Leonard.

Granny received her education in the public schools of Horry County, SC.  She graduated from Voorhees Junior College, Denmark, SC and was a proud graduate of South Carolina State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education.  She retired from the Dorchester School District Four Public School System after 38 years.

She was a longtime member of the St. John United Methodist Church (Sandridge) Dorchester, SC.  She served as a Lay Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, and Usher.  She was a member of the Good Samaritan Lodge.  Her favorite songs she would sing: I'll Be Alright, Who's Side are You Leaning On, and Come and Go With Me In My Father's House."  Her favorite pastime was watching, the Young and the Restless, Wheel of Fortune and the Price Is Right.

Granny leaves behind a legacy of love and service for those of us who were blessed to be touched by her.  We understand that her existence and the imprint she left on our hearts exceeds the quantity of time that she shared with us.

Granny is survived by her children, Alvin (Barbara) Glen of Dorchester, SC, Juliette (Judy) (John Richard, Jr.) Smith-Burris of Kingsland, GA, and Doris Burton (late Eddie L. Burton, Jr.) of Columbia, SC; ten grandchildren, LaKeshia (Daryl, Sr.) Adams, LaToya Glen, LaDaisia Glen, Alvin, Jr. (Camille) Glen, LaShana Glen, Bradford Smith, John Richard Burris, III, Quenton (Taylor) Atterberry, LaDovia Atterberry, and DeQuincy Atterberry; seven great grandchildren, Daryl Adams, Jr., Damonoche Adams, Anahi Glen, Adan Glen, Krista Atterberry, Knova Atterberry, Egypt Babridge, and Na'eem Glen; a special grandniece, Sara Bryant of Elgin, SC; special grandnephew, John Leonard, New Britian, CT; Deborah Davis, the caregiver of 14 years; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
