Joseph James was born on April 20, 1950 in Darlington, South Carolina. During his early childhood, his family relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where he attended public schools, including Erasmus Hall High School.

After high school, Joseph enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a combat engineer from September 1968 to September 1974.  He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal, having served his country with dedication and pride.

In 1976, Joseph met the love of his life, Joann James, in Brooklyn, New York. The two were united in marriage in 1977 at Union United Methodist Church, beginning a lifelong partnership grounded in love, faith, and commitment.

Throughout his years in Brooklyn, Joseph worked in a variety of trades, including electrician, building maintenance, plumbing, painting, and property management. He was a gifted handyman whose talents blessed not only his own home but also the homes of family and friends. Known for his generosity and willingness to help, Joseph never hesitated to lend a hand-whether repairing, installing, or simply offering his time and support. His kindness reached far beyond Brooklyn, extending to loved ones in South Carolina as well.

In 2016, Joseph and Joann returned to South Carolina, settling in St. George. There, he continued to demonstrate his dependable nature and caring spirit. In 2021, he became a member of New Grace United Methodist Church, where he was an active and supportive presence and very fond of the pastor at the time, Pastor Constance Nelson Barnes McLeod. He faithfully served with the Methodist Men and was a member of the church's Construction Committee.

Joseph leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Joann James; his beloved children, daughter Shana James and son Sebastian James; along with a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in­law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Wilson, Edna M. Davis, Naomi Dubose, and Elizabeth James; and his brothers, William James, John James, Oscar James, and Robert James, Sr.

Joseph will be remembered for his willingness to serve, his steady and reliable presence, and the love he expressed through both grand gestures and quiet acts of kindness. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
