John William Dixon was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 21, 1940 to John and Fannie Dixon. He departed this life on December 25, 2017 in Hospice of Charleston in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. John was the oldest of three children. John's parents, brother, Malvin, and sister, Melinda preceded him in death.

John grew up in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Automotive High School. After graduation, John began his career with Western Union and subsequently worked for the New York Transit Authority as a subway train conductor.  Upon retirement after 19 years of service to the City of New York, John relocated to Summerville, South Carolina in 1986. After relocating to Summerville, John became employed by the U.S. Air Force Commissary.

John was known among his family and friends for his sense of humor, love of travel, and love of social get-togethers.

John leaves to cherish his memories, six children, Rhonda Lynn Dixon-Jonaissant (Ernest) of Durham, North Carolina,Derrick Ryan Dixon (Tawanna) of Hempstead, New York, and Crystal Talaya Dixon of Queens, New York from his union with Vivian Dixon, April Marie Robinson (Allan) of Baltimore, Maryland, Arnelle Terre´Johnson (Roy) of Ladson, South Carolina, and Audrian Renee´Dixon of Newburgh, New York from his union with Paula Dixon; eight grandchildren, Taneja Cardenas of Hempstead, NY, Kevin Uzzell (Jackie) of Raleigh, NC, Janée Jonaissant of Durham, NC, Derrick Dixon of Hempstead, NY, Bria Jonaissant of Durham, NC, Savon Stegall of Ladson, SC, Ethan Stegall of Ladson, SC, Jayla Johnson of Ladson, SC, great-granddaughter Camryn Jonaissant; three aunts, Pearline Glass, Clara D. Britt and Minnie Craig; one uncle, Ordie Brown; a host of nieces, a nephew, cousins; New York Transit System co-workers and friends.
