John Herbert Britt, 86 years old, of Reevesville, SC, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025. Born on April 19, 1938, in Reevesville, SC, to Harvey and Eva Britt, he was the youngest of eight siblings, all of whom preceded him in death. Throughout his life, John was known for his unwavering faith, deep devotion to his family, and his commitment to serving his community. His presence was larger than life, and he leaves behind a remarkable legacy of love, laughter, and kindness.

John's love story began when he was united in marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Corine, and their love spanned 63 wonderful, love-filled years. Together, they had three children: Sarah (Alphie), Arlene (Cookie), and Michael (Mike). John was a devoted father who took great joy in being a guiding presence in their lives. His pride and joy were his two grandsons, Jonathan (Noon) and Rhamsys (Ram Ram), who held a special place in his heart. When his son Mike married Heather in 2000, John felt he gained another daughter whom he loved dearly. The bond he shared with his family was one of mutual respect, wisdom, and profound love.

After graduating from Williams Memorial High School, John moved to New York, where he attended New York Technical College and became a certified X-ray Technologist. Professionally, John worked for 40 years as an X-ray technologist at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where his skill and dedication were highly respected by his colleagues and patients. During his tenure at the hospital, he served as a supervisor and union delegate.

A man of great stature and character, John was a devoted servant of God, and his faith was central to everything he did. John was a dedicated member of St. Mark Baptist Church (St. George, SC) and served in several capacities, including Deacon, Trustee, and member of the Male and Combined Choirs. He was also a committed Sunday School teacher, sharing God's word with patience and humility. He took great pride in preparing his lessons to ensure that the Word was taught thoroughly and properly.  Alongside his loving wife, Corine, John made it his mission to care for those in their community, particularly the sick and shut-in, offering assistance with prayer, transportation, or simply a comforting conversation. John's kindness, grace, and giving spirit left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. In New York, John was also regarded as a father figure by many of the young people in the building where he lived for over 40 years, and he was affectionately known as "Mr. Britt" by many.

John's sense of humor and natural gift for conversation made him beloved by people of all ages. He never met a stranger, always seeing the best in others and viewing everyone he met as a friend waiting to be made. His ability to connect with others, combined with his genuine interest in people, made him a cherished figure in the lives of his family, friends, and community. After retiring and returning to South Carolina in 2000, John became an active member of St. Mark's Baptist Church, where he served as a working deacon. He was also involved in the Masonic community and served as a past master of St. John Lodge #80 in Brooklyn during the 1990s.

Outside of his work and community service, John had a deep love for sports, particularly fishing. He enjoyed fishing trips with family and friends, including memorable trips to Boston. One of his favorite fishing companions was his lifelong partner, Corine. Many days were spent with just the two of them, traveling to local ponds, fishing gear in tow, and enjoying each other's company in quiet relaxation. He was also an active member of the 60+ Club in St. George, SC. John had an entrepreneurial spirit before his retirement and was socially active for much of his life. For 20 years, he served as the president of a popular social club, The VIPs, which hosted well-loved annual dance events. His bond with his fellow VIP members, Richard, Sam, George, and Cermon, lasted over 40 years, a brotherhood that still holds deep meaning for those who remain.

John was truly loved by his extended family. For his many nieces, nephews, and their respective families, he was affectionately known as 'Uncle John', a father figure who filled in the gap when their own parents passed away. He and Corine were always there, willing to provide assistance however they could—a meal, transportation, comfort, advice, or just a listening ear.

John's affection extended beyond his immediate family to include his in-laws, who he considered as close as siblings. He shared a special relationship with his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, including Clay (Phoebe), Pecola, Joann (Joe), Fanny, James (Lillian), and Glen (Rose Ellen). His warm and generous heart also touched the lives of numerous nieces, nephews, and his many friends in the St. Mark's Baptist Church family, the St. George community, and the residents of 636 Brooklyn Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, where he lived for many years.

John will be remembered for the incredible impact he had on the lives of everyone he met, and his love and legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished.

John's favorite scripture was Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths."
