Brother Joenathan Utsey was born September 15, 1935 in Dorchester County, South Carolina.  He was the son of the late Joenathan Utsey, Sr. and Blande Brooks Utsey.

He was educated in the Dorchester County School System in Grover, South Carolina.  He was employed by Ryan Contractor, Inc. until he retired.

On August 8, 1959, he was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Jeannie Mae Utsey.  To this union, six children were born: Cathy, Sunny, Shirley, Sidney, Napoleon and David.  David preceded him in death.  He was a loving husband, father, son and brother.  Brother Utsey was a great provider. He would hunt and fish to feed his family.

A ray of sunshine went out of our lives when he went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, August 24, 2020 at MUSC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, David, brothers, Fred, Danny, and Sidney, sisters, Mazie, and Wilmae, sisters-in-law, Daisy Queen, Zadie and Blande and brothers-in-law, Reverend Jesse Sumbry, Marvin and Home.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory: three daughters, Cathy Greene of Walterboro, SC, Sunny Utsey and Shirley (Reginald) Deal both of Grover, SC; two sons, Sidney Utsey of Grover, SC and Napoleon Utsey of Grover, SC; one brother-in-law, Cabis Brown of Rahway, NJ; one sister, Patricia Sumbry of Brooklyn, NY; sisters-in-law, Wilma Whetstone of Bronx, NY, and  Martha Hodges of Smoaks, SC; one brother-in-law, Neal McPhatter of Jamaica, NY; sixteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
