A Time To Be Born
Sister Jeannie Mae Utsey was born on October 14, 1942, in Colleton County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Ben Brown, Jr. and Lizzie "Cee" Brown.
A Time To Live
She was educated in the Colleton County Public School System and completed her education at St. George High School. She was employed for several years with Smoaks Headstart and Ridgeville Headstart. She changed careers and became a Certified Nursing Assistant. She was an avid reader, loved to cook and was a nurturer to all of the children in the community.
A Time To Love
On August 8, 1959, she was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Jonathan Utsey. To this union, six children were born: Cathy, Sunny, Shirley, Sidney, Napoleon and David. David preceded her in death. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister.
A Time For Every Purpose Under The Heavens
Sister Utsey was a lifelong member of Red Bank United Methodist Church where she sang on the choir, was a member of The United Methodist Women and chair of the Kitchen Committee. Her favorite song was "Do Lord, Remember Me".
A Time To Die
A ray of sunshine went out of our lives when she went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, January 12, 2015 at the Colleton Medical Center.
A Time To Mourn
She was preceded in death by her parents, son, brother, Ben Brown, Jr. and sister, Zadie McPhatter.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: her husband, Jonathan Utsey; three daughters, Cathy Greene of Walterboro, SC, Sunny Utsey and Shirley (Reginald) Deal both of Grover, SC; two sons, Sidney Utsey of Grover, SC and Napoleon (Wakeisha) Utsey of Smoaks, SC; one brother, Cabis Brown of Rahway, NJ; one sister, Patricia (Reverend Jesse) Sumbry of Brooklyn, NY; three sisters-in-law, Wilma Whetstone of Bronx, NY, Martha (Clyde) Hodges of Smoaks, SC and Mary Helen Williams of Walterboro, SC; one brother-in-law, Neal McPhatter of Jamaica, NY; sixteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
