James Edward McMillan, a proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away on July 23, 2024.
James the son of the late Willie and Bertie McMillan grew up in St. George, SC. He was born on September 11, 1937, and attended the public schools of Dorchester County. He extended his studies at Claflin University. During his time at Claflin, he became a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated. James enlisted in the United States Army in 1957. He valued the time he served in the military. As part of this service, he served as a medic.
In addition to his military career, James was a public-school teacher in Georgia. He also served as director for several federal agencies in the states of Georgia and South Carolina. Later in his career, he served as a caseworker for Lieber Correctional Institute.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Bertie McMillan; his oldest son, Vantresse McMillan; siblings, Lionel McMillan, Joseph McMillan, Clinton McMillan, Raymond McMillan, Virgil McMillan, and Wilma Wrice.
He leaves to cherish fond memories, his loving wife of 54 years, Patricia McMillan; two devoted sons, Tylerchyski (Wanda) McMillan and Brigodare (Niki) McMillan; one brother, Alton (Sylvia) McMillan; a daughter-in-law, Linda McMillan; four grandchildren, Rondell, Joseph, Vantrel, and Jacobi; seven great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
