Hoover Singletary, affectionately known to his family as "Unc", passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.

Hoover was born on May 9, 1929 in Grover, South Carolina to the late Walter and Nellie Singletary.  He received his early education in St. George, South Carolina public schools.  At a young age he was baptized and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church. Hoover was 19 years old when he left South Carolina for greater opportunities in Detroit, Michigan.  There he worked for General Motors and retired with 30 years of service. While in Detroit he met and married his wife Velma Williams. The union ended in divorce.

After retirement, Hoover relocated to Washington, DC. He worked in construction for a few years. He also worked at the neighborhood Safeway Grocery Store assisting customers with their groceries and driving them home.

Hoover enjoyed fishing, especially ice fishing in Canada. He also enjoyed gardening. Planting tomatoes and beans was his favorite.

Hoover was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Nell Linder and Deborah Utsey; brothers, Calvin Singletary and James Singletary.

He leaves to cherish his memory  his niece and care giver, Janice Linder of Washington, DC and nephew and caregiver, Maurice  Linder of Washington, DC; a host of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other family and friends.
