Today we pause to pay tribute to the memory of Brother Herbert Jessen Simmons.  He was called to eternal peace and rest on Monday, April 11, 2022 at Pruitt Health Nursing Home in Moncks Corner, SC.

Herbert was born July 8, 1928 in Dorchester County to John and Anna Liza Simmons, who preceded him in death.

He attended the public schools of Dorchester County.  Herbert worked in the logging business for 40 years.

At an early age he joined St. Luke United Methodist Church of Grover, SC, the current New Grace Methodist Church.  There he served as an usher and was totally against chewing gum in church.  Dad was like E.F. Hutton when he spoke everyone listened.    He was the church section and a member of the Male Chorus.

He was joined into holy matrimony to the late Virginia Brown Simmons.  To this union eight children were born.

To cherish his fond memories his children, Ida Lee Simmons of Rowesville, SC, James A. Simmons (Maybleen) of Summerville, SC, John H. Simmons (Sarah) of Harleyville, SC, Hebert Simmons, Jr. (Pamala), Dorothy Jenkins, Margaret Kelly (William) and Derrick Simmons (Angela)  all of St. George, SC and Mazie Brown of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Johnnie Mae Hankins; six brothers, Plent Simmons (Mary), Ben, Jr. Simmons (Corrie), Joe Simmons (Marie) (whom all preceded him in death); Leroy Simmons (Ollie Mae), Allen Simmons (Marie) all of St. George, SC and Adolph Simmons of Jersey City, NJ; twenty-six grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren; fifteen great, great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; very special cousins, Hattie and Terry Parr; a special friend, Mr. Joe Edward Jamison.  A special thanks to Debra Green, Virginia Schaffer of hospice, Irene Ross, caregiver and the entire staff at Pruitt Health and Hospice Care.
