Helen Singletary Polite, 68, of St. George, SC, departed this life on October 30, 2023 after an extended battle with breast cancer. She encompassed unwavering faith in God throughout her battle and is now getting her eternal rest.

Helen was born on September 11, 1955 to Calvin C. Singletary and Mary Lee Miller Singletary in Detroit, Michigan. She moved to Grover, SC at an early age where she attended Dorchester County schools, including St. George High School. While in high school, she was a member of the cheerleading squad, library club, drama club and the Block G athletic club. She graduated from St. George High School in 1975.

She became a member of the United Methodist family at an early age. She was an active member at St. Luke United Methodist church and then New Grace United Methodist church where she led many songs with the choir and participated in community events.

In her adult life, she began work for the state of South Carolina's DHEC in Walterboro, SC where she was a dedicated breastfeeding counselor. She was very passionate about her career and retired in 2018.

Helen is preceded in death by her grandson, Aodhan J. Salley (Jawyiah), her sisters, Barbara A. Singletary (Grover), Michelle Singletary (Grover) and her parents Calvin and Mary Lee Singletary.

She is survived by her children; Lemel Salley (Atlanta, Ga), Jawyiah Salley (Columbia, SC), and Paris Polite (Walterboro, SC); her grandchildren, Ashlyn H. Washington (Jawyiah) and Journi A. Williams (Paris); her siblings, Debra Singletary (Washington DC), James Singletary (St. George, SC), Geraldine Goff (Summerville, SC) and Tyona Singletary (St. George, SC).  She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Helen will be remembered for her love of family, her resourcefulness and for her forgiving spirit. At an early age, she could be heard by her neighbors (cousins), singing in the wee hours of the night. Singing was her gift and she used her gift to praise the Lord. She will be deeply missed by many.
