Gwendolyn Simmons, affectionately known as Gwen, passed away on April 1, 2024 in Charleston, SC. Gwen was born to Louise and Carlyle on June 29, 1951. She was proceeded in death by her father Carlyle Simmons. Gwen was born in St. Mary's Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, New York. She had many talents, including being a self-taught seamstress. She sewed her own outfits, some of which she still had. She was known for her delicious cakes and pies and was an amazing overall cook.

After high school, Gwen took a job at a major phone company. Not long into her career, she was persuaded to take the exam for the New York City Transit Authority. She passed the exam, and on Valentine's Day in 1978 she started her career as a railroad clerk. Thirty-two years later she retired as an Assistant Train Dispatcher.

Over the years she was well traveled. She took trips to places like Spain, The Caribbean, Mexico and many others. She also enjoyed going on deep sea fishing trips with coworkers.

After retirement, Gwen moved to Summerville, SC to be closer to family and purchased her dream home. She also dedicated herself to becoming a member of the family church, St. Marks Baptist Church, and was baptized on April 2017.

She spent her retirement enjoying time with family and caring for her mother Louise Long. To know Gwen is to love Gwen. She was selfless in every way and was the confidant to many.

Gwendolyn leaves behind her mother Ms. Louise Long; her daughter, A'Londra (Kerry) Williams; her grandchildren, DeAnna (Kasheem) Smith, Byron (Rhonda) Graham Jr., Danyell Simmons, Keyera Williams; her great-grandchildren, KayVon Smith, Brielle Smith, Ariyah Smith, and Landon Graham; her siblings, Cicely Long; Adrianne Clarke, Mishone (Curtis) Simmons-Dickinson, Wanda Simmons, Tyra Hicks, Corey Simmons—Grandma Cathy Sellars; Rodney Simmons and Byron Simmons; aunts, Christine Primus, Eva Syphrett, Lucille Britt; uncles, Emmet (Dorothy) Britt, Allen Britt; nieces, Yazmine Ray, Tangela Ray; nephews Jakai Small, Kaisen Small, Devin Favors; and her good friends, Phyllis Rodgers, Walthene Primus, Amanda Coates and Carrie Ann Hopkins; and a host of other relatives and friends.
