Grover Cleveland Harrison's Obituary
On Wednesday, June 9, 2010, Grover Cleveland Harrison, after an extended illness, departed this life.
Born on November 23, 1920, in Prairie, Mississippi, Grover Cleveland Harrison was the youngest of eight children born to William H. Harrison and Estella Blanchard Harrison. All seven siblings preceded him in death.
He was educated in the Clay County Mississippi public school system. He committed his life to Christ at an early age and was baptized in the faith at Saint Mark Church of God in Christ in Prairie, Mississippi. He was a devoted member and Deacon of Johnson Temple church of God in Christ in Holly Hill, South Carolina. Deacon Harrison was the program coordinator for the Johnson Temple Annual New Year's Program.
Always the entrepreneur, in Clay County Mississippi, he was a painter, barber and dairy farmer. Even as a youth, he was an avid hunter and dog trainer. His extraordinary talent was known throughout the state. He also spent many quiet hours as a musician playing harmonious tunes on his harmonica.
In 1956, Cleveland was recruited and hired by Southern Railway as Dog Trainer for the company's private hunting resort now known as Norfolk Southern's Brosnan Forrest in Dorchester, South Carolina.
Cleve retired from Norfolk Southern in 1983 after 39 years of service. He continued as a highly skilled dog trainer and hunting guide until 2007. On November 17, 1976, K.W.G. Gun Club of Orangeburg, SC honored Grover when he was named the Sportsman of the Year for his dedication to Hunting and Field Training.
One son, Kenneth Hansel Harrison preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife, Carolyn Nance Harrison; one son, Donald (Nancy) Harrison ; one daughter, Val (Levi) Anderson; six grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Ophelene Nance Jones of West Point, MS, a special cousin Hattie Harrison Wilson of Prairie, MS and generations of nieces, nephews and friends.
He will forever be remembered as Pop-Pop, Grover, Cleve, the dog man and Dub. He was an individual who cared for others and was always ready to help, talk and laugh with you.
