Throughout a life filled with a richness of experiences, Frank Chandler of St. George, S.C., was known for his dedication on the job, his enjoyment of classical and soul music, and his love of travel. Frank, 72, passed away unexpectedly December 21.

A work highlight for Frank was being honored for his outstanding service at the state's MacDougall Correctional Institution in Ridgeville. After 28 years with the medium security prison, he retired in 2001 as a program coordinator, earning a special Can Do Club salute from the South Carolina Department of Corrections and the Institution's Division of Classification and Inmate Records.

In addition to liking the classics, his musical appreciation also included hit Motown and soul artists such as Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye.  Among his many hobbies and interests was his appreciation of travel, including visits to many cross-country destinations, especially with his partner of 37 years, Sandra Jamison of Grover.

Born June 6, 1952, in New York City to Pauline Lewis, Frank was later adopted by his stepfather Luke Chandler. At an early age, after moving to the Texas Community of St. George, Frank became a member of a local congregation there — Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

After graduation from Williams Memorial High School in 1970, Frank, who was known by his nickname "Big Red," furthered his education at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., where he earned a bachelor's degree in business.

Frank was preceded in death by mother Pauline, sister Connie Coaxum and several uncles, aunts, and cousins. Over the years, he had fond moments and memorable times with many relatives and loved ones, including his survivors: nephew Jamaya J. Coaxum, for whom he assumed guardianship after the death of his sister in 2021; and five closest cousins: Carrie Lewis and Laura Brothers of Boston, Mass.; Armie Mikell of St. George; Bernell Murray of New Jersey and Angela Burrell of California.

In addition to his treasured Sandra, he leaves behind his cherished "bonus" daughter Stacy Sims and her husband Tony of Atlanta, GA., and "grandchildren" Zeniya, Paris, Sage, Bryson and Janylah, as well as his best friend, Alvin Breadmon of the Midwest.
