Emmie Cason Douglas was born in Anson County, North Carolina on March 7, 1922. The last surviving of 14 children born to Lester Andrew Cason and Coreaner Streater Cason, she departed this earthly existence on Easter Monday morning, April 9, 2012 at Roper Medical Center in Charleston, SC after a lengthy illness. She was a devoted and faithful member of Mt. Olivet A.M.E. Zion Church, having joined the congregation in the early 1950's and continuing her membership until the present.

In 1942, she was joined in holy wedlock to the late James Hurbert Douglas, Sr. This union was blessed with five children.

She was educated in the old Negro Schools of Anson County, NC, having graduated high school at Anson County Training School in Wadesboro, NC. She attended Fayetteville State College in Fayetteville, NC and later graduated from Maco Beauty College in Greensboro.

Emmie retired from P. Lorillard Tobacco Company in 1972 and pursued her great passions: fishing and gardening. She loved to see things grow, whether it was children, or animals, flowers or vegetables. And if there was a fish in the pond or river, she was going to be the one to catch it. She was a faithful member of Jasmine Chapter # 7 of the Eastern Star until declining health.

She was a wonderful cook, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and a friend to anyone in need. She opened her heart and home to many children in Foster care over the years.
Emmie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers and six sisters.

She leaves to cherish her fond and loving memories, three sons, James "Billy" Douglas, Jr. (Marietta) of Greensboro, NC, Lester Douglas (Arlene) of Jamestown, NC and Charles Douglas (Pam) or Greensboro, NC; two daughters, Vagella Smalls (Whaley) of Charleston, SC and Patrician Kerns (Scott) of Atlanta, GA; one sister-in-law, Wilhelmina Cason of Morven, NC; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
