Mrs. Dorothy Mae Bryant Nurse age 80, of the Texas Community St. George South Carolina, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 8, 2014 at home with her family.
Dorothy was born January 8, 1934 in Dorchester County, South Carolina. She was born an only child, the daughter of the late Marion and Reatha Haynes.
Dorothy was educated in the public school system. She attended Henry P. Archer School and graduated from Burke High School.
On March 7, 1950 Mrs. Nurse was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Zeola Bryant, Jr. She then moved to Brooklyn, NY with her family. Mrs. Nurse had nine children.
Dorothy lived and worked in New York for many years. She retired from Ideal Toy Company.
After the death of her husband, Zeola, Dorothy later met and married the late Deighton Nurse. She then relocated back home to South Carolina. She became active in the community. She joined Bethel Baptist Church, where she sang on the Senior Choir and served as treasurer. She also was a member of the Lovely Hill Convention Choir. She also became a Foster Parent, opening her home and heart. Dorothy provided temporary arrangements for children who were unable to remain in their own homes due to abuse or neglect. She volunteered her time for the Summer Free Lunch Program for the youth. She enjoyed humming church hymns, doing crossword puzzles, and watching reruns of Matlock. She truly loved spending time with her family, having an ice cold Coke to drink and a good laugh!
Dorothy was preceded in death by her daughter, Adalee Bryant and one granddaughter, Ebony Bryant.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her precious memories, four daughters, Celestine Toni Spruill, Charlene Moore (Gerald), Darlene Heyward all of St. George, SC, and Alethia Nichols (Martin) of Summerville, SC; four sons, Walter Bryant, Eugene Bryant (Tina) and Randy Bryant (Mary) all of Brooklyn, NY and Elton Patrick Bryant (Vernetha) of Goose Creek, SC; 29 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, 17 great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
