Obituary

The man of valor, Mac Arthur Spells was born in Dorchester County to the late Joseph and Carrie Spells on November 1, 1943. Deacon Mac graduated from Williams Memorial High School and later in life attended Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College where he studied Industrial Electronics Technology and received an Associate Degree.  Deacon Mac worked with ITT Conoflow for 43 years, until he retired.

Mac is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Fannie Spells, and their four children, Clayzella Spells of   St. George, Patricia Spells Salley (Carlton), Orangeburg, SC, Barry J. Spells (Tuwanna), Suffolk, VA, Christopher L. Spells (Christina) Seaford, VA.  He is also survived by his siblings, John Clay Spells (Phoebe), Corine Britt (John), Sarah P. Britt, JoAnn James (Joseph), James S. Lemon (Lillian), and Glen Lemon (Rosa Ellen).  He was blessed with nine biological grandchildren, two bonus grandchildren, and a total of five great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his parents.

He was a wonderful husband, father, sibling, friend, and leader in the church, Masonic Fraternity, and the community.  Mac was a very hard worker and always willing to "put his hand to the plow" when assistance was needed.  He loved God and Harvey Chapel Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, and many other positions.  He was the ultimate family man; he and Fannie were coming upon 60 years of marriage.  Deacon Mac had a close relationship with his siblings, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. There was also a special deacon and his wife who served as Angels in his life.  Many young people admired him and enjoyed listening to his wisdom. He loved spending quality time with his daughters here in South Carolina and traveling to Virginia to spend time with his sons and their families.
