Deacon Sidney
Disher
Nov 1, 1942 — Sep 26, 2022
Saint George
On the morning of September 26, 2022, the Lord called his good and faithful servant Sidney Disher home after a brief illness.
Sidney Disher was born in St. George, South Carolina on 01 November 1942 to the late Lazarus and Elizabeth Disher. He was the youngest of two sisters and one brother and enjoyed spending time with his three siblings over the course of his life.
Sidney graduated in 1961 from Williams Memorial High School where he enjoyed taking woodworking classes and playing the trumpet. His Christian journey began as a member of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church in St. George, South Carolina. Sidney enjoyed serving the Lord and continued his service as a faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church after relocating to Brooklyn, New York. At Bethany, he served as an Usher and Treasurer for the Men's Usher Board, and was ordained as a Deacon under the leadership of Rev. Dr. William Augustus Jones Jr.
Sidney enjoyed 31 years of service with the United States Postal service as a Letter Carrier for the City of New York. Upon his retirement he returned to his hometown where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon of the Missionary Circle #2 for Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Sidney dedicated much of his time helping church members assigned to his circle.
In retirement he turned his attention to his horses, participating in trail rides, parades and providing horse rides. Sidney spent time refurbishing his childhood home. He also enjoyed fishing in his fishpond and taking road trips to visit his family and friends.
Sidney enjoyed studying the bible and sharing the word with others. He was a great storyteller and always had a word of good advice for those in need. He enjoyed joking with others, which was a true sign of admiration for those on the receiving end.
He is preceded in death by his two daughters; Renea Disher-Hardy (Christopher) and Sheryl Disher; and two sisters; Florias Bell Mack and Jannie Disher.
Sidney is survived by his loving and devoted wife Edna Disher; daughter Yvette Williams (Kyle) of Woodbridge, VA; son Sidney L. Disher of Reevesville, SC; brother Horace (Annie) Disher of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren; Andrea, Karyne, Kyle II, Christian and Christal; three great-grandchildren; Destiny, Daniel and DeJa of Northern VA and Maryland; two sisters-in-law; Carrie M. Ravenell of Reevesville, SC and Rosetta Ravenell of Brooklyn, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
