Carolyn Nance
Harrison
Jul 7, 1930 — Mar 9, 2023
Dorchester
Carolyn Nance Harrison passed away on March 9, 2023 peacefully at home in Dorchester, SC with her family beside her.
Born July 7, 1930 in West Point, Mississippi to Calvin Nance and Sicfronia Deanes Nance, Carolyn was the youngest of four siblings.
Upon marrying Grover Cleveland "Cleve" Harrison, they created their family of five: Cleve, Carolyn, Kenneth, Donald, and Valeria. In 1956, they made the difficult decision to leave their extended family in Mississippi when Cleve accepted a position training hunting dogs with Southern Railway's private hunting resort, Brosnan Forest, in Dorchester, SC (now owned by Norfolk Southern). Brosnan Forest also hired Carolyn as its head housekeeper of guest lodges, working there from 1959 to 1983. She was the first woman hired for the position. Carolyn later took classes at a local college and started a catering business. She also worked for Dorchester County's Clemson Extension Office, providing nutritional guidance to members of the community. Additionally, Conoflow in St. George, SC employed Carolyn as an assembly line worker. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, working in her garden, and spending time with her family and friends.
Carolyn also was a devoted member of Johnson Temple Church of God in Christ in Holly Hill, SC. However, her ability to attend weekly services changed with her husband's death in 2010. Carolyn's health began to decline, ultimately becoming bedridden in 2014. Carolyn "aged in place" with her family, allowing them to care for her just as she and her husband had similarly cared for relatives.
Many will fondly remember her as "Carolyn." But for her relatives from Mississippi, she will be "Dash." For her children, she will always be "mama" and "Caroline." For her grandchildren, she will be "Bae" and, for her fellow church members, she will be "Mother Harrison." This woman – who meant so much to so many people – will always be in our hearts.
Carolyn leaves behind one son, Donald O. Harrison (Dorchester, SC); her daughter, Valeria H. Anderson (Dorchester, SC); one daughter-in-law, Nancy S. Harrison; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a host of relatives across the country, including a close niece, Jeweldine Allen Meadors (Springfield, IL).
A graveside service for Carolyn will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 17, 2023 at Belleville Memorial Gardens, 2900 Belleville Road, Orangeburg, SC 29116 (at the intersection of Belleville Road and Kirkland Street/Richard Street). There, she will be reunited with her son, Kenneth; her husband, Cleve; and her sister, Ophelene Nance Jones — all who share the same final resting place.
