Betty Jo Lewis Brunson was born on May 8, 1939 in Saint George, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Carmell Lewis and Anna Bell Durant Lewis. She entered into eternal rest on Sunday, October 2, 2016 surrounded by family.

Betty was a member of Saint Mark Baptist Church for many years. She attended the public schools of Dorchester County. She received an undergraduate degree in education from Fordham University in New York, and a graduate degree in education from the College of Charleston. Betty was married to Leon E. Brunson of Mullins, SC. From this union two sons were born. She was employed as an educator in the Colleton County School District and the Dorchester County School District for thirty years, from which she retired.

Betty leaves behind: two sons, Eric Brunson (Sharon) of Irmo, SC and Leon T. Brunson (Karen) of Matthews, NC; two brothers, Howard Everette Lewis (Gladys) of Saint George, SC and Gordon Lewis of Saint George, SC; three granddaughters, Devon, Alexis, and Erin Brunson; one uncle, John Wesley Lewis Williams of Seville, FL; one nephew, Teddy Lewis of New York; and three first cousins, Idella Primus of Saint George, SC, Elden Williams of Saint George, SC, and Leroy Williams of Harleyville, SC.
