Sister Betty Jean Brown was born on December 22, 1937, to the late John and
Tereatha Barnwell in St. George, SC.

She attended Williams Memorial High
School where she was a member of the basketball team.

Betty was joined in
holy matrimony on June 13, 1954 to the love of her life Clarence Brown Jr. Two
children were born to this union: Irvin and Angela.

In 1956, she and her family moved to Brooklyn, NY where they lived for over 24
years. While in NY Betty was a faithful member of Bridge Street A.M.E. Church,
where she served on the Usher Board.

Betty loved the Lord and accepted Him as her Savior at an early age. When she
was young, she joined Bethel A.M.E. Church. When she returned to St. George
in August 1980, she resumed her membership at Bethel AME Church. She was
very active in church and was a faithful member of the Stewardess Board #1,
Missionary Board, Usher Board, Church School Staff & the Pulpit Aid Board.

Betty enjoyed life and loved to travel. She was funny, devoted, dependable and
faithful. She was of regal stature full of grace and dignity. She was witty,
confident and full of wisdom. She was a valuable friend and a great confidant
and never divulged a secret. She raised her children to fear God and treat
others fairly and with respect.

She was a devoted wife of 58 years and never
once was unfaithful to her husband Clarence, affectionately known as "Cous."
Most of all, she loved God. She had this insatiable hunger for God and the word
of God. Going to Sunday morning service was not enough for her – she needed
more. She would look at Christian television every day, go to Sunday school and
bible study, read books and most importantly – she would read the Word of God.
All in her quest to know God better, to get closer to Him. She sought instructions
from the Word of God on how to live her life, how to treat her fellowman, how to
live holy, how to honor her husband and raise her children. She knew God, she
accepted Him, she embraced Him and she loved everything thing that He stood
for.

Betty departed from this life after a triumphant battle with cancer on Monday,
August 27, 2012. She left a legacy of being a woman of prayer and faith. She
had many childhood friendships that she cherished, but there were a few who
were extremely close to her and dear to her heart: Mabel Blackman, Samella
Odom, Lorine (Sue) Summers, Barbara Bonaparte and the recently deceased
Gwendolyn Elmore.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Clarence Brown Jr.,
one daughter, Angela D. Brown of Austin, TX. One son, Irvin Jerome Brown
(Pamela) of Hinesville, GA, one Stepson, Anthony Furby (Cathy) of Brooklyn,
NY, one stepdaughter, Patricia Baxter of Charleston, SC, one brother, John
Barnwell of Springfield, MA, one granddaughter Tiffany Brown of Dallas, TX, four
step grandsons Anthony Calloway of Reading, PA, Kahraun Flowers of
Hinesville, GA, Michael and Donovah Brown of Little Rock, AR and one adopted
grandson Marquel "Mark" Smalls of St. George, SC, two nieces, Angela Barnwell
and Patricia Barnwell, one nephew, John Barnwell Jr. all of Springfield, MA,
three sister-in-laws Betty Ann Wright of St. George, LaVerne Neal of Brooklyn,
NY & Jean Shuler of Raleigh Durham, North Carolina, two brother-in-laws
Clarence Shuler (Brenda) of Colorado Springs, CO and Ralph Jenkins (Clarissa)
of Grover, SC, a devoted caregiver and cousin, Lena Sims of St. George,
longtime prayer warrior & cousin, Alma Williams, faithful family friend, Ernest Lott
of St. George, SC, and a host of devoted family, cousins and friends.
