Mrs. Bertha Lee Gelzer "Dumpy, " a daughter of the late Mrs. Maggie Owens was born April 18, 1926 in Harleyville, South Carolina and entered eternal rest on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at St. George Health Care Center. She grew up in Harleyville, South Carolina and attended public school in Dorchester County at an early age. She attended Elem Missionary Baptist Church and later joined St. Daniel United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully until her health failed. Bertha Lee learned at an early age the true meaning of hard work and responsibility. She worked diligently in the cotton fields and in the garden attending to various types of vegetables. She was a babysitter, housekeeper, a kindhearted, cheerful, generous, loving, caring and friendly person. She was admired and respected by many.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Levi Gelzer; daughter, Mrs. Elzeta Moye of York, PA; two sisters, Willie Mae Burden and Jestine A. Brown; nephew, Albert Lee Burden; and a special friend and companion, Mr. George Perry, Jr.
Bertha leaves to cherish fond memories with her niece, Gracie Burden Brown; two rabbits (Nard & Tira) and (Cole & Dillion) her babies. The loyal friends Diann Carter and Gilda Hartzog, Penny Bell, and Mary Ellen Way; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
