Obituary

Alfonzo Singletary, affectionately known as "Pete" passed away Friday, January 28, 2022, at his home surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Alfonzo was born on October 28, 1947, in Dorchester County. He was the son of the late Jennie Ruth Singletary. At an early age, Alfonzo became a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.  As a member he served on the United Methodist Men, as a church custodian, sang in the choir and served on the finance team. After the merger to New Grace United Methodist Church, he sang on the New Grace Male Chorus. Alfonzo graduated from Williams Memorial High School in 1967. In October 1967, he was drafted in the United States Army, and he served in Viet Nam for two years.

Alfonzo was united in holy matrimony to Mary Dell Hankerson, and they were blessed with 51 years of marriage. He was employed with Edisto Electric Cooperative for 35 years. Through this career he met many people and made a lasting impression. Alfonzo had a love for many athletic and outdoor activities. Alfonzo played basketball in high school and with a few adult leagues. He was also a baseball player and enjoyed his weekend games. Alfonzo also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Alfonzo leaves to cherish his memories: wife, Mary Dell; three daughters, Yolonda S. Jones (Chris) of Tobyhanna, PA, Katrina Singletary of Irmo, SC, and Katina S. Way of St. George; five grandchildren, Kirston J. Mussenden, Taurean Singletary, Kristi Jones, Peter Way, and Kristian Brown; one great-granddaughter, Kali Mussenden; two sisters-in-law, Genevieve Fields and Betty Carn of St. George; one brother-in-law, Earlie Hankerson, Jr. of Elmwood Park, NJ; three special cousins, Roger Barton of Orangeburg, SC, Ruby Lemon and Bernice Rollins of St. George; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
